Think Your Pet Rocks? Try Having a Pet Rock!

Ever had a pet rock?
I sure did when I was little, and I think it was because children of my generation used our imaginations more than those today (no offense, it's totally true though.) Tomorrow, September 7 2014, is National Pet Rock Day!
The pet rock became a fad in the 70's when it flourished as a great marketing ploy for people to buy as a 'pet'. The great thing was, it even came with a remarkable and witty little owner's manual, detailing ways to take care of your new little pet.

Pet Rock Instruction Manual

Food

Most pet rock owners, though not intending to harm them, do not feed their pet rocks. Contrary to popular belief, pet rocks do need food to live a content life. You can feed your pet rock a few drops of water, some dirt, or even a drop or two of oil. To feed your pet, simply rub food onto the rock until it is soaked up, or falls off.

Bathing

Bathing your pet rock is essential to the health of your small companion. To bathe your rock, you must first fill a small container with water. Make sure this container has a lid. Then, drop a large amount of dish soap into the water. Next, place your pet rock into the container. Place the lid on the container and secure firmly. Shake the container vigorously until you feel that your pet rock is clean. Then, remove your rock from the container and hold under running water to rinse.

Tricks

Teaching your pet rock to do tricks not only benefits your pet rock, but can also be very entertaining to you, and your friends and family. Below are some of the most basic tricks a pet rock can learn.

Sit: To teach your pet rock to sit, start by placing it on the ground. Next, tell it to "sit." You will be surprised, as well as satisfied when you find that your pet rock remains in a sitting position on the ground.

Stay: First, have your pet rock sit. Then, use the command "stay" while holding up your hand with your palm facing your pet rock. Walk away, keeping an eye on you pet rock. Amazingly, your pet rock will be in the same spot when you come back, no matter how long you leave it there.

Attack: Pick up your rock (depending on which hand you usually use for writing) and use the command "attack." Then, throw your pet rock at the person you want it to attack. Your pet rock will improve on this trick as you improve on aim and speed in your throw.

Health

It is truly a terrible thing when you find out that your pet rock is sick. To prevent this, make sure you keep your rock clean, feed your pet regularly, and take them to the vet's office at least once a year. Although you may get strange stares, do not be alarmed. Most veterinarians do not like pet rocks, as they "aren't as interactive as other pets", which is not true for all pet rocks. If you take care of your pet rock correctly, they can make an exceptional pet. It is not necessary for your pet rock to receive vaccinations because they have an extraordinary immune systems that some say is "rock hard." Pet rocks rarely get fleas, and never get worms.

Enjoy!

Pet rocks can make great pets for those who have allergies, or tight budgets. They are good listeners, and learn tricks easily. Even small children can take care of them with ease, although adult supervision is advised if the pet is small enough to swallow. Pet rocks never die, because of which, they can be your soul-mate until the day you die.

Sounds like a fun little "pet", especially for the kiddos! Think of how much fun your little humans could have with a pet rock, especially if you all did fun activities together! Fun for them, and super easy for you! It's a win-win if you ask me :) So celebrate National Pet Rock Day together and get your kids those 'pets' they have been begging for!

PS Today is National Writing Date Day, as well as Fight Procrastination Day! Check out yesterday's post to learn more!

Are you a Writer? Maybe a Procrastinator too? You're in Luck Tomorrow is Your Day!

Any fellow writers out there?
Well congratulations because tomorrow, September 6 2014, is National Writing Date Day! What is this glorious holiday, you are wondering? I'll tell you.

National Writing Date Day is a day where everyone (not just the die hard writers like me) should take some time out of there day, and dedicate it to stretching out the old writing muscles. Set aside even just 20 minutes, and write in a journal, write a beautiful love sonnet, hell even write an apology letter that you've been putting off for the past 5 years! Whatever it is, get that pen to paper, or keys to the keyboard and write something!

Writing is a dying breed of skills. Everyday I come across examples of bad grammar or poorly constructed sentences... and sadly alot of these examples are coming from national news websites and local ones as well! Shouldn't these people know better if this is their field of work? I should think so, but like I said writers are becoming a dying breed of people. So do yourself a favor and help save the endangered writers, and become one yourself! I promise you won't regret it!

Now for those of you out there who like to procrastinate... let's turn the table towards you. Tomorrow is also Fight Procrastination Day! Let's be honest, everyone procrastinates. I know I do! I was especially a bad procrastinator while I was in college, always putting off papers and projects until the last minute to do more important things like going to parties and staying out all night (sorry Mom). I'll give you an example of my bad procrastination days:
It was almost Halloween, and my group of friends decided to get a few suites at The Venetian and all go to Las Vegas for the weekend. There were about 40 of us, and it was a fun and rowdy weekend. Mind you, we were all LDS so we didn't drink, but we did stay up until all hours of the night dancing our hearts out. We spent the daylight hours on Saturday by the pool, and then repeated the night before. Sunday came and we drove home back to Utah, and I arrived home that night around 5 pm and suddenly realized the next day I had a 20 page paper due in my philosophy class about Nietzsche that I had not even started. Normally, I could bust out a simple 2-3 page paper in about an hour and a half. However, Nietzsche is no easy subject, as any of you know who have studied his work, and it was 20 pages! I was royally screwed. I literally pulled an all nighter, after not sleeping really for the past 2 nights, and I managed to finish my paper about an hour before my class started. It could have been a lot better, and I wouldn't have been so panicked and stressed if I had started early on the paper. The moral of the story kids: don't procrastinate.

So tomorrow is also Fight Procrastination Day! Here are some ways we can each work on not putting off things that we really should do today, and help us all get things done a bit earlier:
1: Keep a planner or a calendar. This way, you can keep track of important dates, and things you need to do. You can even get fancy and color code to help keep yourself organized!
2: Start work promptly. If you have a project you need to accomplish, start working on it immediately. Even if you set out a certain amount of time to work on it everyday until it needs to be done, like 20 minutes for example, it will help you achieve your intended goal without stressing out and finishing it at the last minute.
3: Finish your to-do list that day. If you've made a list of goals to finish that day, try to actually do them. If you push them off until the next day, then you will have even more to do that day and probably end up pushing them into the next day and so on until you are way behind on things and everything is piling up on you!
4: Spend your free time wisely. If you end up having some down time, don't spend it all relaxing or being lazy (which we all do... I mean Netflix isn't just going to watch itself!) Try to take some of your free time and use it to accomplish some goals you need to do. You will feel much better than binge watching all of your shows, I promise.
5: Don't just decide to give up. If you have procrastinated until the last minute, don't just let it go and end up not finishing your task. Suck it up and finish it, because in the end you will feel worse about yourself if you pushed it off and then just never did it. Follow through and finish it! You can do it!

A Whole Lot of Charity

Tomorrow September 5,2014
is International Charity Day and National Lazy Moms Day. You couldn't ask for two more different things to celebrate, and both are equally important!

In 2012 the UN nominated this day to commemorate all of the important work that charities do, and they chose this day specifically because it is actually the anniversary of Mother Theresa of Calcutta. There are hundreds of thousands of charities around the world, each working to do something different to make the world a better place. Some raise money to help find a cure and to support research for diseases such as ALS, Cancer, and AIDS. Others need funds to help feed starving families in third world countries, while there are those that send volunteers to help rebuild communities destroyed by natural disasters. Whatever the case, there are so many ways we can help reach out and make a difference in the world.

Recently the ALS ice bucket challenge went viral, and while many criticized it as something people did on social media for "attention", it actually has raised massive amounts of new awareness of the disease, not to mention incredible amounts of donations.
Here are some facts from an article published on BBC.COM by Lucy Townsend:

I mean, 98.2 million dollars is pretttty amazing people! So choose tomorrow to do something charitable, whether it is a local charity, national, or even international. You may not think your contribution will make a difference, but it really and truly does! Plus you get some of that good karma coming your way, and you feel great which is always a plus! Here are some local Utah Charities, some national ones, as well as international... check them out if you want! You can do simple things like donating to the GoodWill or DI, or going to help in a local homeless shelter. Whatever you decide to do, put some good vibes out into the world tomorrow!

::Check out this website for a list of Utah Non-Profit organizations!

::Here on the BBB website they list every charity in the nation and rate them, so if you're worried about a charity not being honest or worthwhile, here are all the facts listed out by them.

::Finally, on this website you can use their resources to find an international charity of your liking. Remember anything helps!

Above is a video talking about some celebrity charity work. Most may be doing it for appearances, but hey it all goes to a good place in the end right?
And here is a video showcasing some of the best celebrity ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos, which helped to raise millions of dollars!

What's all this Hoopla & Hootenanny About?

  Hello!
I'm so happy you've stopped by my page! I know I have given brief descriptions about this blog on my "About" tab a well as on my info on the side table. However, I will give another introduction :)
The point of this seemingly pointless (but fun and awesome) blog is to showcase a different holiday everyday; because I believe that we should have something to celebrate every day of the year! So instead of having just another boring Tuesday, ho-hum Thursday, or whatever Saturday, you can find something different and interesting to celebrate. I will add some activities or ideas for ways to enjoy the different types of things we will be holiday-ing about! Also, I will be posting about the next day's "holiday" so that you know what's happening before the day. So I will recap and you can look on the post the day before so you know what's going on, and then read about what will be happening the following day. Make sense? I hope so!
So what do "hoopla" and "hootenanny" mean?

                              Hoopla-

                            Hootenanny-

So now you get it. It's gonna be a Hoopla&Hootenanny everyday! Let's go :)
